ITINERARY (PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE)
We begin with Raffles Landing Site, where Sir Stamford Raffles from the East India Company landed on our shores, sparking off the beginnings of free trade for this tiny nation. South of the Singapore River, is Chinatown, where many Chinese immigrants came to settle. We will visit several places to learn how they lived and worked in this newly adopted homeland. Although it was times of hardship, there were also pockets of enjoyment; when they had the wealth, they would dress up and pay a visit to the grand theatre for a night of opera, or to an opium den for a social smoking session. Stemming from these Chinese migrants, have a taste of home-grown brands such as Lim Chee Guan (producers of barbecued meats), Old Chang Kee (famous local curry puff and other snacks), and Boon Tong Kee (Hainanese chicken rice) and peek into their humble histories which have flourished into large franchises, and even international reach. What’s a party without some fancy clothing? Prep yourself for a visit to the cabaret or opera with tailored outfits from Mama Misse (traditional cheongsams) or Kevin Seah (bespoke suits and shirts). Each boutique will showcase the beauty of hand-crafted fashion, with specially selected fabrics. All suited up, you can now head to the actual party, and have a swig of beer at the Asia Pacific Breweries, home to local favourite Tiger Beer. Now that’s a party from old world to new.
