ITINERARY (Our Singapore Story : An Artist Journey)
Singaporeans originated from different countries and cultures, and this ‘rojak’ beginnings is what gives us our unique identity today. With this tour, we aim to take visitors beyond the city, on a cultural tour of the island, through one artist’s public murals. We begin in the heartlands, Ang Mo Kio, with a little known hobby that transcended the kampong era: Bird Singing. Brighten your morning with melodious chirps, followed by a visit to the local ‘kopitiam’ for coffee like a true local. The local exploration continues with a visit to a HDB block as well as a wet market and hawker centre. From the humble neighbourhood, we head out and pay a visit to each cultural hub. In Chinatown, where early settlers came by boat, we see how they once lived, on both hard and rich times. Moving to Little India, we witness the colourful rituals and trades of our Indian community. Lastly, we head to Kampong Glam, a sacred land where the last Sultan of Singapore called home. Yip Yew Chong’s paintings appear in each one of these destinations, to bring out the unique feature of the past, amongst the happenings of the present..
